Mr Nice: An Autobiography.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1996. First edition. 466pp. + 12pp. photo-insert. Howard Marks's mythic life story, signed by him on the title page and inscribed "Stay High".

Marks, who adopted numerous aliases, became known as 'Mr Nice' after he bought a passport from convicted murderer Donald Nice. He was eventually convicted by the DEA for drug smuggling and, following seven years in jail, released in April 1995. After publishing his autobiography and campaigning for changes in drug legislation, Marks died almost exactly 21 years later. Fine in dw.

Together with:
i) publisher's folding photo-illustrated promotional publicity card, signed by Marks, and inscribed by him: "Thank you for smoking";

ii) another promotional publicity card, not signed;

iii) a 5pp. review of "Mr Nice" by Iain Sinclair, photocopied from the London Review of Books (January 1997), briefly annotated in ink next to his photograph by Peter Whitehead (whose pseudonymous book is also reviewed). Whitehead was a key player in the Howard Marks legend, their interconnected lives for a while revolving around, as Marks recalled, "marijuana, LSD, rock music and after-eight philosophy".
