THE UNDERGROUND LIFESTYLES HANDBOOK.

Los Angeles: Aware Press, 1970. First edition (p/b original). 192pp. Cartoon illustrations by Doug Lovenstein.

"A Trip To: Making love commune-style; Getting busted for pot; Body painting; Making sex films; The love life of a Groupie [Cynthia Plaster-Caster]; Woodstock; Hair And Other Revolutionary Features of A New Kind of Life" (back cover blurb).

Koontz, who later became a successful horror writer, originally submitted a manuscript to the Aware Press in 1969 with the title "Going Underground". They arranged for the book to be substantially re-written, without his consent, with the result that the finished article bore little resemblance to the original manuscript. Despite agreeing to a contract stipulating that the book was to be published under a pseudonym, Aware credited Koontz and his wife as authors, even though Gerda played no part in its writing. Koontz has since disavowed any claim of responsibility for the book.

The blurb claims that "if you're a member of the Establishment [this book] will tell you what it's all about."

Wrappers slightly rubbed, with faint crease to lower corner of front cover; faint creases to spine; o/w a tight, Very Good copy of an extremely scarce title.
