Yugen's early issues focused on Beat and local Greenwich Village writers, and later on published writers associated with Black Mountain College and the New York School. The contributors who regularly gathered at LeRoi Jones's apartment became known as the "Yugen crowd", and typical parties included Kerouac, Ginsberg, Corso, Bremser, Selby and, when he was in New York, Burroughs, with music provided by Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, and Don Cherry, among others.
