PROJECTED MSS. OF WHISTLING IN THE DARK: POEMS OF 1961.

Fourteen holograph manuscript pages, rectos only, including signed title sheet. Blue ink on textured Japanese paper. Each sheet 28x21.8cm. The title page bears a quotation from Giosuè Carducci, both in the original Italian and Finlay's translation. Each sheet has been either initialled or signed by Finlay, and where applicable he has noted its appearance in a periodical (Origin, New Saltire, TLS, POTH, Fish-Sheet, etc.). Due to a lack of funds the projected collection was never published, though by 1963 Finlay hadn't given up hope (see item #14), and one of the manuscript pages is a poem dated from that year (love's).

The other poems are: A Night For The Pictures; Snow (by Tatsuji Miyoshi); Poem: a little Horse….; The Tug (for Maurice de Vlaminck); Scene; The One-Horse Town; My Little Beat Mill In The West; Lucy's Wee Brother; On a Wee Boy Drowned; Time Passes; The Pond of Oo Farm (Orkney); and No Thank You, I Can't Come. Three of these poems (Snow, Scene, and The One-Horse Town) were included in the Fulcrum Press edition of 'The Dancers Inherit the Party' (1969).

The manuscript's origins are unclear, but it seems plausible that it was sent to Fred Hunter sometime in the early-mid '60s in return for financial assistance. Near Fine (unfolded).
