The New Improved Psychedelic Shop.

Original poster designed by Rick Griffin to celebrate the first anniversary of the Psychedelic Shop, featuring an art show by the Jook Savages.

Psychedelic Shop proprietor Jay Thelin's own copy, accompanied by a sheet of the shop's stationery signed by him. SF: Double-H Press, late 1966. Printed in black on white stock. 48x35.7cm.

Rick Griffin's first psychedelic poster, incorporating many of the symbols of hippiedom and psychedelia in its decorative border: mushrooms, peyote buttons, marijuana leaves, American Indian artifacts, feathers and more.

It was while taking his artwork for this poster to the printer that Griffin met the organisers of the Human Be-In, an encounter that led directly to his second, closely related poster.

The Psychedelic Shop, founded by Ron and Jay Thelin, sold psychedelic books, posters, hippie clothing, and drug paraphernalia. It opened on January 3rd, 1966, just in time to be mentioned in the Trips Festival programme. Located near the corner of Haight and Ashbury, and later on featuring theatre seats in the window looking out on the locus of San Francisco's hippie culture, it became an important gathering place, and was soon joined by other shops nearby selling health foods, clothing and crafts.

Single pinhole to top left corner, o/w a Near Fine copy of this significant poster, with great provenance. (Art of Rock p.79).
