GRATEFUL DEAD. Original handbill designed by Melinda Gebbie announcing the Russian River Rock Festival, held at the Rio Nido Ballroom, northern California, September 1967.

Printed in black on white stock. 18.7x13.9cm. Although not named on the handbill, the Grateful Dead played at the festival on September 3rd (and worked on what became 'Dark Star' while performing there).

An early work by Melinda Gebbie, who later contributed to Wimmen's Comix, Tits & Clits Comix and Anarchy Comics, before producing her own book, Fresca Zizis, in 1977, which was subsequently banned in the UK. In the 1990s she began collaborating with future husband, Alan Moore, on Lost Girls, a story in which the female protagonists of Peter and Wendy, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz meet and share sexual stories and experiences.

Near Fine. The handbill is thought to be rarer than the poster. (Art of Rock 2.328).
