The Art of Rock. Posters from Presley to Punk.

NY: Abbeville, 1987. First edition. Sm. folio. Black cloth, embossed. 516pp. Dustwrapper design by Wes Wilson.

An exceptional copy, SIGNED on the half-title page (some with brief inscriptions) by psychedelic poster artists Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley, Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, David Singer, and Randy Tuten, and additionally by Oracle editors Allen Cohen and Michael Bowen; photographers Herb Greene and Lisa Law; legendary purveyor of psychedelic posters, Ben Friedman (Postermat); and latter-day artists, James Stark and John Seabury.

The book has also been SIGNED on the front free endpaper by the book's author, Paul Grushkin; by John Goddard (at the photograph of his landmark Mill Valley record store, Village Music); and, on the Trips Festival page, by Stewart Brand, former Prankster, founder of The Whole Earth Catalog and future-tech visionary (Brand was among the first to envision the links between the counterculture and the computer revolution).

This lavish, compendious and authoritative volume, the poster collector's 'bible', reproduces more than 1500 posters in full-colour, plus handbills, tickets, and ephemera, and is especially strong on the psychedelic years in San Francisco, 1965-71, including a near complete listing of the Family Dog and 'Bill Graham Presents' numbered series.

Near Fine in dw. The best copy this cataloguer has encountered, featuring many unrepeatable signatures by significant artists and countercultural luminaries who helped define the psychedelic era.
