The earlier of the two dates featured the first complete performance of 'Music of Changes' by John Cage, composed in 1951 for David Tudor. It was Cage's first instrumental work to use chance throughout, and involved applying decisions made using the I Ching, from which it also derived its title (Cage was first given a copy of the I Ching in early 1951 by Christian Wolff, published in 1950 by Wolff's father, Kurt Wolff of Pantheon Books). The premiere at Judith Malina and Julian Beck's Cherry Lane Theatre on New Year's Day, 1952, sold out, with Cage himself tending the box office. The programme also included works by Pierre Boulez, Christian Wolff, and Morton Feldman.
The second concert, held six weeks later, featured '2 Pastorales', recently composed by Cage and, like 'Music of Changes', using chance operations and the I Ching. The recital also included works by Anton Webern, Wladimir Woronoff, Henry Cowell, Stefan Wolpe, Josef Matthias Hauer, Lou Harrison, Christian Wolff, Earle Brown, and Morton Feldman (the first performance of '3 Intermissions').
