The first issue of London Oz is signed by Richard Neville and Martin Sharp on the front cover, issues #13 and #45 have been signed by artist John Hurford, and all the major inserts and almost all the numerous colour variants are present.

Richard Neville founded Oz from his family home in Mosman, a suburb of Sydney, in January 1963, together with a group of friends, among them Martin Sharp, Garry Shead and Alex Popov, and university student magazine editors Richard Walsh, Peter Grose, Peter Kingston and Mike Glasheen. The name for their new magazine originated from 'The Wizard of Oz', rather than the shorthand term for their homeland, a more obvious reference that Neville claimed did not occur to them at the time as the term was not then in widespread use. Intended to satirise Australia's conservative, deeply conformist and highly censored culture, it was mired in controversy from the beginning. The first issue, published on April Fool's Day 1963 as "a monthly magazine of satire and opinion", contained interviews on the taboo subject of abortion and portrayed a chastity belt on its front cover, resulting in a prosecution for obscenity, followed a year later by a second prosecution for the sixth issue, the cover of which depicted three men, including Neville, appearing to urinate against the Tom Bass sculpture on the side of the new P&O building in Sydney. Neither legal action resulted in anything more than a fine for the first prosecution and a conviction subsequently dismissed after appeal for the second, but both foreshadowed Neville's later and more serious encounters with the law.

Aimed somewhere between Private Eye and the New Statesman, Oz combined provocation, mockery and humour, much of it provided by the emerging brilliance of Martin Sharp, whose prolific output of caricatures lampooned Australian puritanism and offended right-wing commentators. His work was given a solo exhibition at the Clune Gallery in December 1965, announced by Sharp with a hand-drawn display ad. in Oz #24, followed soon after by the news that he was leaving for London, along with Richard Neville. The last issue they worked on together before their departure was Oz #26 (March 1966). They were subsequently credited as 'Foreign Agents' right up until the penultimate issue in September 1968, and contributed occasional dispatches from their overland travels in Asia and, following their arrival in London, for two further years. Sydney Oz eventually closed in February 1969, Richard Walsh citing a "lack of support from the public and advertisers."

London Oz (known simply as Oz after issue #19) launched in January 1967, its inaugural front cover printing Martin Sharp's recurring image of a gap-toothed grin. Inside, Germaine Greer (who Richard Neville first met at a party in Sydney in early 1965), contributed a column entitled 'In Bed with the English', Colin MacInnes wrote about the "impressive, if unorganised" Michael X, and Private Eye was dismissed as reactionary. The tone betrayed Neville's self-declared ambivalence towards the emerging counterculture (it included a parody of the hippies featuring a strip cartoon using photographs by Bob Whitaker shot in Indica bookshop), and its visual style followed on from Sydney Oz largely unmodified. This changed dramatically after Martin Sharp took LSD for the first time (during a Pink Floyd gig at UFO), and by the sixth issue (June 1967), guest edited by John Wilcock, Sharp's graphics had become fully psychedelicised.

Aside from numerous UPS/LNS syndicated features, the contributors to London Oz include: Germaine Greer; Colin MacInnes; David Widgery; Polly Toynbee; Robert Hughes (who had earlier drawn the image of 'God' for the front cover of Sydney Oz #2); David Reynolds; Simon Watson-Taylor; Anthony Haden-Guest; Jean-Jacques Lebel; Raymond Durgnat; Angelo Quattrocchi; Joseph Berke; Neal Ascherson; Caroline Coon; Bill Levy; Jim Haynes; Hoppy; Miles; Nick Kent; Dick Pountain; Bob Harris; Albie Thoms; Steve Abrams; Danae Brook; Kate Millett; Michael Abdul Malik; Heathcote Williams; Lynn Darnton; Sheila Rowbotham; Clive Goodwin; Jonathon Green; Charles Shaar Murray; Roger Hutchinson; Stan Demidjuk; Lee Harris; Micheline Wandor; Phil Cohen; and Mick Farren.

Artists who contributed work include the art directors (listed above), along with Mike McInnerney; Hapshash and the Coloured Coat; John Hurford; Ed Barker; Peter Till; Adrian George; Rod Beddall; Andrzej Dudzinski; Peter Brookes; Larry Smart; HR Giger; Malcolm Livingstone; William Stok; and William Rankin (the work of American underground artists Robert Crumb, Gilbert Shelton, S. Clay Wilson, John Thompson, Richard Corben, Guy Colwell, Ed Badajos and Greg Irons also appeared).

Interviews exclusive to Oz (as distinct from those syndicated by UPS), include John Peel; Dick Gregory; Tuli Kupferberg; Mike Ratledge; Norman Zinberg; Wavy Gravy; Jimmy Page; Frank Zappa; Marsha Hunt; Arthur Lee; Anaïs Nin; Judith Malina; Rufus Collins; Timothy Leary; and Germaine Greer. The lively letters pages includes correspondence from figures as diverse as John Calder, Clive James, Neil Megson (Genesis P-Orridge), Jay Landesman, Tony Palmer, Craig Sams, and Abbie Hoffman.

Sydney Oz #17 has a 4cm. tear to the right edge running throughout, and a small adjacent loss to the front cover. Some issues have wear along the spine and light creasing, but overall the condition is Very Good. Despite lacking original printings of the first and final issues, this is an exceptionally rare complete set of the Australian edition, and also includes the scarce postscript issue from December 1969 (numbered 56, following the series of fourteen now impossible-to-find newsletters produced between March and December 1969).

All the London Oz issues are Very Good plus, or better, with many issues Near Fine, including the two copies of Oz #5, 'Plant A Flower Child'. The set includes all the major inserts, as well as several others rarely seen: i) blue subscription form in issue #2; ii) Oz Sheet No.1 in issue #4, together with a flyer advertising mail order buttons (badges) from J.L.T.Y. & Co. (located at 49 Kensington Park Road). A full-page ad. for the same company printed in the magazine advertises mail order psychedelic posters and states that these were also available further down Kensington Park Road at The Head Shop; iii) Che Geuvara (sic) poster (designed by Paul Lawson, though Virginia Clive-Smith claimed responsibility for the mis-spelling) + the scarce b/w flyer announcing Yoko Ono at the Saville Theatre in issue #8; iv) a rare b/w Hangup posters broadsheet ad. in issue #13 (folded), illustrated with reproductions of 99 posters (Hangup was a poster shop in Islington, north London); v) Outcry! People's Park poster + Running Man Book News booklet in issue #21; vi) Honeybunch Kaminski poster in issue #24; vii) Print Mint posters leaflet in issue #26; viii) Jimi Hendrix memorial poster by Mike McInnerney in issue #30; ix) Janis Joplin/Oz Old Bailey Trial poster in issue #36; x) subscription form/ad. for Wembley Rock'n'Roll show, still attached to staple, in issue #43, together with a rare Hang Up Posters broadsheet ad. reproducing 16 posters in colour and 32 in b/w (folded); xi) subscription form/ad. for Cozmic Comics, still attached to staple, in issue #44, together with 'Bill Graham Presents The Paul Butterfield Blues Band Sometime in September…Somewhere in San Francisco', a one-sided flyer printed in blue on thin pink paper (origin unknown), and a rare double-sided illustrated broadsheet promo for Suck (thin paper, folded; the only one seen by this cataloguer). The promo advertises the availability of the Suck publication, 'Wet Dreams', published several months later (May 1973), so it seems likely that the insert was added to some unsold copies of Oz #44 after its initial publication in September 1972 to augment the review it carried of another Suck publication, 'The Virgin Sperm Dancer'.

In addition, almost all the colour cover variants are included: a) issue #5 (Martin Sharp's 'Plant a Flower Child' fold-out photo-collage poster based on Bob Whitaker's photographs of identical twin girls, Michelle and Nicole Aloszko) - pink and yellow versions (there was also an orange version, unseen by this cataloguer); b) issue #11 - four versions: dayglo red, green, yellow and orange (the latter two have the perforated stickers gummed to the covers; there was also a fifth version in pink); c) issue #28 (School kids) - two versions: blue on blue (20,000 copies printed), and blue on white (10,000 copies printed); d) issue #30 - two versions: pink and blue on white, and pink, blue and grey on white (both copies include the Jimi Hendrix memorial poster); e) issue #31 - two versions: red and yellow;
f) issue #33 - three versions: dark blue, dark brown, and black); g) issue #34 - three versions: brown with photo in lime green, red with photo in lime green, and deep pink with photo in lime green and white; h) issue #35 - three versions: yellow with writing in purple, pink with writing in dark blue, and pink with writing in dark brown.

An outstanding set of Sydney and London Oz. The Australian edition pioneered countercultural satire aimed squarely at the puritanical establishment and predates the rise of the underground press in America (the Los Angeles Free Press was founded in 1964), while its British successor, with its School kids, Gay and Cunt Power issues and exuberant psychedelic overlays, embodied the hippie movement's ideals of freedom of expression and expansion of the mind. Throughout their combined ten year lifespan, both Oz editions frequently upset the conservative establishment and repeatedly fell foul of the authories, mischievously and fearlessly pushing forward the decade's social, political and cultural boundaries, while simultaneously redefining the possibilities of magazine production and graphic art. As contributor Roger Hutchinson later wrote, "Oz achieved a style and a momentum of its own. The style was largely visual, wholly experimental, obviously influenced by LSD, without precedent in magazine publishing and quite inimitable" (High Sixties, p.102).
