PRESS AGENCY PHOTOS.

A group of eight original b/w press photographs, including two showing the Oz defendants, taken immediately after they had been granted bail by a High Court Judge and released from jail, and five showing the demonstrations held outside the Old Bailey in protest at Judge Argyle's earlier sentencing of the three editors to imprisonment. Dimensions vary: most measure approx. 19x25cm. (largest 25x20.5cm.; smallest 15.2x25.7cm.). Caption labels to verso of each, most of them printed in aniline purple, with photo agency stamps to all but one of the prints.

The two photographs of Richard Neville, Felix Dennis and Jim Anderson, by then internationally renowned celebrities, show them providing an impromptu press conference outside Wormwood Scrubs on August 9th, 1971, where they had spent the previous three days, revealing their prison hair cuts for the first time (a photobomber intrudes in one of the shots).

Other photographs show a march of placard-carrying Oz demonstrators and a policeman outside the Law Courts (July 30th, 1971); demonstrators staging street theatre outside the Old Bailey after Judge Argyle had given out prison sentences, an effigy of him blazing in their midst (the crowd included Caroline Coon, Carol Sarler, Jenny Kee, Warren Hague from the GLF, and several Oz school kids); police forcibly removing a demonstrator; and two "middle-aged demonstrators - Mrs. Birdwood and Mrs. Szlevonitis", marching in support of the severity of the sentence, with protestors in the background (August 5th, 1971). The final photograph shows Richard Neville, Mick Farren and David Pollock (Chairman of the British Humanist Association) at an Oz protest meeting at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, arranged "to discuss the issues arising out of the Oz trial" (August 13th, 1971).

Slight discolouration and corner creasing to the latter, o/w only minor edge-wear. Rare to find a group of eight together.
