Characters of Fitzrovia.

London: Chatto & Windus in association with Felix Dennis, 2001. First edition. 4to. Grey paper-covered boards. 262pp. + fold-out maps of Fitzrovia. Dustwrapper and book design by Richard Adams. Illustrated throughout with photographs, paintings, old engravings, and cartoons, with original woodcut drawings by Cliff Harper. Foreword by Felix Dennis, who financed the book. SIGNED and inscribed by Felix Dennis on the title page: "Tony and Carol from Felix 12/01" (Tony and Carol Bennett founded the Hassle Free Press in 1975, publishing and distributing underground comics, later changing the name to Knockabout Comics, which, like Dennis, published the work of Robert Crumb, among others).

The book charts the history of Fitzrovia and the artists, writers, bohemians and villains who either lived there or passed through, from Karl Marx to the Kray Twins, and Christina Rossetti to Dylan Thomas. Former Sydney and London Oz staff member Marsha Rowe (asked by Felix Dennis to co-author the book with Mike Pentelow of the Fitzrovia Association), had been working as a secretary in Fitzrovia when she co-founded Spare Rib in 1972. Dennis himself founded what would become his publishing empire in a small office above a paint shop in Fitzrovia in the early '70s, located for him by Lemmy, and it has remained Fitzrovia-based ever since.
