Ed./pub. Paul Williams (Chester Anderson #20-23). Early issues mimeographed and stapled; magazine format with colour front covers from issue #11 on.

Crawdaddy! was started on the campus of Swarthmore College in 1966 by 17 year-old Paul Williams, and its pioneering rock criticism helped launch the careers of writers Jon Landau, Sandy Pearlman, Gene Sculatti, Peter Guralnick, and Richard Meltzer, as well as that of Williams himself (he left the magazine in 1968).

Artists featured in these early issues include: Bob Dylan; The Byrds; Tim Hardin; The Remains; The Animals; Mitch Ryder; The Troggs; Howlin' Wolf; The Mamas & the Papas; Donovan; The Yardbirds; Butterfield Blues Band; John Lee Hooker; Jefferson Airplane; The Doors, The Beatles; The Youngbloods; The Rolling Stones; Jimi Hendrix; The Kinks; Buffalo Springfield; Van Dyke Parks; Country Joe & the Fish; Love; The Who; Brian Wilson; The Beau Brummels; Tom Rush; Randy Newman; The Velvet Underground; Smokey Robinson; The Great Society; Moby Grape; Traffic; The Incredible String Band; Janis Joplin; and many others, along with extensive record reviews.

The magazine briefly suspended publication in 1969, before re-appearing the following year as a folded newsprint tabloid, with its title unpunctuated.
