Carnaby Street.

Walton-on-Thames, Surrey: Hobbs, 1970. First edition. Colour illustrated laminated boards. Sm. 4to. 74pp. Colour-plate illustrations (one double fold-out) in Yellow Submarine-style by Malcolm English (commissioned by Tom Salter, proprietor of Gear, soon after he joined Astrop/Hill Design Associates).

The book charts the development and rise of Carnaby Street, and includes a shop and boutique listing. Salter opened his first shop on Carnaby Street in 1964. He had originally intended to open a furnishings boutique in Henley-on-Thames ("where we had beautiful premises"), but instead followed the advice of John Stephen, who told him: "Never mind about beautiful premises; go where the beautiful people are - open in Carnaby Street."
