MANUSCRIPTS. Original manuscripts of five articles written for Suck magazine by Germaine Greer, and two ms. pages for her gossip column, 'Earth Rose'. Contained in a card folder with the author's first name written out in ink by her on the cover.

i) 'Lady Love Your Cunt'. 5pp typescript, with several holograph amendments and corrections in the author's hand, including the subtitle: "The third document of Cunt power". Published in Suck #2 (March 1970; reprinted in 'Wet Dreams', and later collected in 'The Madwoman's Underclothes: Essays and Occasional Writings' [1986]). Includes one unpublished paragraph, scored through in blue ink with amendments in black ink, still largely legible. Argues that women's acceptance of their bodies is a rebellion against patriarchy, and that patriarchal fears have contributed to the stigma that has surrounded the vagina: "Primitive man feared the vagina… as the most magical of the magical orifices of the body." Greer concludes with an invitation: "Why not send us a photograph of your own cunt, with your names labelled on? If you can't get a photograph printed, send us the film, and your labels marked on a drawing and we'll do the rest. The results will be published", with an afterthought in holograph: "If all else fails bring it to us and we'll kiss it for you."

ii) 'Ladies Get on Top for Better Orgasms'. 2pp. typescript (incomplete, missing pages 1 and 4). Published in Suck #3 (August 1970). Argues that the "female on top" position has the advantage that a woman "can arrive at a position to accept the cock without having to take her weight on her hands", and that "She is at last conscious of female potency, the secret power in her lovely complex genitals."

iii) 'Bounce Titty Bounce'. 5pp. typescript, with holograph amendments and corrections in the author's hand, signed 'Germaine'. Published in Suck #4 (November 1970). Argues that patriarchal control over the shapes of women's bodies is particularly evident in the design of the brassiere: "no more than a muzzle, a mask, binding joys and desires with wire and rubber and nylon and clips and cotton."

iv) 'Suck Now'. 5pp. typescript, with title, holograph amendments and corrections in the author's hand. Published in Suck #5 (May 1971), with the subtitle "blow by blow report on Wet Dream Film Festival etc.", and reprinted in 'Wet Dreams'. Argues that "Our cause is sexual liberation. Our tactics the defiance of censorship", and that "The Wet Dream Film Festival was not a festival of liberated sex and could not itself liberate anyone, for it is axiomatic that one can only liberate onself". Concludes: "What we discovered at the Wet Dream Film Festival is that we will have to generate enough energy in ourselves to create a pornography which will eradicate the traditional porn by sheer erotic power."

v) 'Dry Cunt' + 'Tights' + 'Fucking With The Famous'. 3pp. typescript, headed with the author's address in Italy and inscribed 'From Germaine', with holograph amendments and corrections in the author's hand + holograph note at the end to Bill Levy: "Dear Bill, I had no idea you were holding space for No. 6. I haven't even seen No. 5 yet. Jim has told me to let you have something post haste, so here you are. There's a bigger thing in me about perversion - which I'll get together properly, love, Germaine". Published in Suck #6 (October 1971). Three short pieces (the first two reprinted in 'Wet Dreams'): the first concerns the "drying up of vaginal secretions" and the tragedy that "some women, like the authoress of this article, spend years suffering from the complaint"; the second outlines the disadvantages of tights and their "connection with unpleasant vaginal odour and minor perineal inflammation"; and the third, featuring snippets of sexual gossip for 'Earth Rose', includes mention of revelations of sexual assaults by Al Capp, the reactionary American cartoonist/humourist.

vi) 'Earth Rose'. 2pp. typescript, titled in holograph by Greer, with minor holograph emendations, and, on a third sheet, her handwritten postscript: "If I had a cock for a day I would get myself pregnant." Short gobbets of gossip, five of them published in Suck (issues #4 and #5). One, scored through in biro, and unpublished, reads: "Those cinemagoers who are wondering how Anita Pallenberg's nipples are always so marvellously erect in Performance ought to know that she squirted them with freezing water from an aerosol before each take." The text continues (printed in Suck #4 in a slightly altered version): "The best bits of the film, Performance, which reveal beyond doubt that Mick Jagger has the biggest and floppiest scrotum in the northern hemisphere were not released from the laboratories. You just might get to see them at a technicians' stag party".

CORRESPONDENCE. A collection of letters to the editors of Suck.

i) two note cards from Germaine Greer in envelope, postmarked 19th October, 1971, addressed to 'William de Cooney Lapides' (pseudonym of Bill Levy): a) autograph note: "Dear William, Something for Earth Rose's mailbag! Germaine"; b) typed note, signed in black ink, "Germaine", with author's address in Italy, c. summer 1971. Begins: "Dear Bill, Do you know about Compendium's trial for selling 3 & 4?" (Compendium was a radical bookshop in Camden Town, north London).

iv) Three Autograph Letters Signed from Dr. Eugene Schoenfeld to Bill Levy (1975-1981) + one 1pp. typed letter signed from Levy to Schoenfeld (December 1981). Contents concern Schoenfeld's case (including appeal) against the US government regarding forfeiture of Suck magazines by US mail as obscene. He contended that the "materials were destined for use by a doctor in furtherance of his medical practice and professional writing." Includes photocopy of verdict of US Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, 10th August, 1981: [Suck] "taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value". Schoenfeld, better known as Dr. HipPocrates, or Dr. Hip, wrote widely-read sexual advice columns for the underground press.

Approx. 97 words. e) autograph letter from Bill Levy to Girodias (74 words), opening: "This is a fan letter. You were one of my high school heroes. Typewritten in Dutch on British European Airways stationery, for a sum of money from Peregrine, Lord Eliot, handed over in the UK to Mr. Davos, who handed this sum over to de Ridder at the National Airport of Brussels, 31st January, 1970. The money was used for the printing of Suck #2. b) 4pp. autograph letter signed from Lord Eliot to Bill Levy (January 1974). References in passing to John Michell and Heathcote Williams. c) tls from Lord Eliot to Bill Levy, envelope postmarked 3rd August, 1999.

ix) Three Typed Letters Signed from Gershon Legman to Bill Levy (18th December - 17th March, 1972) + one TLS (+ envelope) to Susan Janssen (16th September, 1974). Together with: a copy of Legman's anti-hippie diatribe, 'The Fake Revolt' (NY: Breaking Point, 1967), with the author's name and address written out by him inside the front cover + TLS dated 17th November, 1967 from Legman to Bill Levy, then editor of International Times. Legman was an American writer best known for his books 'The Rationale of the Dirty Joke' (1968) and 'The Horn Book: Studies in Erotic Folklore and Bibliography' (1964).

x) Four Typed Letters Signed to the editors of Suck from Jens Jørgen Thorsen (c. 1971/ 1972), one of them with a short holograph note from Jim Haynes to "Bill, Susan, Willem". Thorsen was a Danish filmmaker ('Quiet Days in Clichy', 1970), jazz musician, and former member of the Situationist International. Together with: a treatment for Thorsen's projected film, 'The Wet Dreams or Sexotopia' (1972). 18pp, typed sheets, tape bound at spine, with numerous holograph amendments by Thorsen; signed by him on the final page. The front cover lists the "cooperation" of the Suck editors, Salvador Dali, Jean Genet, Otto Muehl, Valie Export, Anaïs Nin, Country Joe "and a lot others including the technical crew." The film was never made, though Thorsen did make 'Another Wet Dream', one part of an anthology film in nine segments entitled 'Wet Dreams' (1974), produced by Max Fischer and Lasse Braun. Bill Levy writes: "In 1973 Jim Haynes wanted to take a chance with Max Fischer to make a Suck/Wet Dreams film. William Levy, Susan Janssen and Willem de Ridder were not convinced. Many people who subsequently came to Amsterdam at Jim's invitation for a so-called Wet Dream Festival, found themselves on a (sex) film set with bad vibes. They felt used and then blamed the Suck 'family' for selling out. 'Another Wet Dream' also includes segments by Nicholas Ray, Dusan Makavejev and Heathcote Williams ('Flames')."

xi) 2pp. Autograph Letter Signed from Jean-Jacques Lebel to Susan Janssen and Bill Levy (13th April, 1973) + stapled photocopy of Lebel's 2pp. letter to Jim Haynes attached. "I thought it a good idea to send you a copy of the letter I just sent Jim. The pseudo-wet dream festival was everything you said it would be but worse, much worse. A degrading event. Thank goodness a whole bunch of us got together elsewhere and created tender and clean conditions for falling in love - that part of Amsterdam was again marvelous! It works every time! - but it had nothing to do with the movie hype." The letter continues with Lebel describing his harassment at Belgian border on his journey back to France because of "old politico-cultural chaos we created years ago with Yoko Ono at the Knokke-le-Zoute festival" (1967). Lebel was fined and spent the night in jail in Mons: "Shattering experience… they put me in there stoned, hallucinating, torn away from my lover in the middle of the night on the highway!" His letter to Jim Haynes concerns "the recent Amsterdam disaster… This is what happens every time the so-called 'sexual revolution' gets divorced from the social revolution by money-hungry or power-hungry sharks like Max F. ….", and about re-writing Haynes's interview with him for his collection of essays and interviews on sexual liberation, 'Hello I Love You'. Plus cc typescript of Levy's reply to Lebel (14th May, 1973), in which Levy takes issue with Lebel's "comments about 'sexual & social consciousness blah blah blah'… My method in SUCK & the WET DREAM FESTIVALS has been ideogrammic - it presents, rather than comments on. This method has worked in changing people's hearts & minds."

xii) Three Typed Letters Signed from Richard Neville to Bill Levy. a) 1pp. typed letter on Oz letterhead stationery (March 1970), signed "Richard". With holograph edits for partial publication in Suck #3 (August 1970). b) cc to Bill Levy of typewritten letter on Oz letterhead paper to Jim Haynes, dated 28th December, 1970, signed in ink, "Richard" (published in 'Wet Dreams', p.175). Neville's letter famously apologises for his "purloining of 3 frames from PERFORMANCE off cuts" featuring "Mick Jagger's naked front" (Neville later described it as [Jagger's] "salami-sized penis and scrotum as big as a sugar melon", 'Hippie Hippie Shake', p.240). The censored sequence had been smuggled to Amsterdam for the Wet Dream Film Festival after Jim Haynes had asked the film's producer, Sandy Lieberson, for permission (it proved to be one of the big hits of the festival). Neville sneaked into the projection room and clipped off the frames without telling anyone, thinking that they would "make an exciting Oz graphic". Their theft upset both Lieberson and Jagger, and prompted Neville to write this letter of apology to Haynes (although the editors of Oz still went ahead and published the images in Oz #32). c) TLS to Bill Levy (21st January, 1974) on The Living Daylights stationery (a magazine edited by Neville and published in Melbourne by Richard Walsh).

xiii) Three Typed Letters Signed to Bill Levy from Jim Anderson. a) 1pp. tls on Oz stationery (21st September, 1971). "Richard N. is still in the states, rocketing from New York to San Francisaco in a big car full of dope and broads…". b) 2pp. tls on Ink stationery (31st July, 1973), with added holograph note and small drawing. Trying to write sexual frustration story for Suck - "The Dick Pountain Don't Touch Me Please, I'm Heterosexual, Fairy Tale"; "I am loving the Wet Dreams Book"; "Why doesn't Amsterdam have a hippie love temple yet? A club like Milky Way for example but with orgy rooms and generally encouraging sexual atmosphere". c) 2pp. tls (December 1973). Writes about final issue of Oz ("a disappointment"); a planned trip to Africa, including Lamu ("a pleasure island off the coast of Kenya, known to the freak trailboppers"); not writing the Dick Pountain/ sexual frustration story after all (this part of the letter published in Suck #8); and his recent Amsterdam story for Oz.

xiv) TLS to the editors of Suck from Thomas Dunker of Horseshit - The Offensive Review, complaining about the use of a story from Horseshit that appeared in Suck #3 "without permission" + an invoice for $1500.00 (17th February, 1972). Together with: Horseshit #1 and #2 (Hermosa Beach, CA: Gauntlet Press/Scum Publishing Company, 1965-1967) + TLS with envelope from Dunker to Bill Levy (7th March, 1968), then editor of IT, asking "would it be possible to sell Horseshit in England?" Horseshit was co-edited by two ex-military brothers, Thomas and Robert Dunker, and ran for four issues. In 1968 it was partly responsible (along with Zap, Snatch, and the SCUM Manifesto) for the arrest of Berkeley bookseller Moe Moskowitz on charges of selling pornography; in 1969 The Mothers of Invention referenced the magazine on their spoken word track, "German Lunch".

A significant collection of primary source material relating to Suck, "Europe's first sexpaper", and the two erotic film festivals it organised, the first of their kind anywhere. Suck rebelled against sexual repression in all its forms, promoted sexual freedom and experimentation, and helped pave the way for the personal and political liberation movements that followed.
