London: Peter Owen, 1961. First edition. A gothic novel by the British author, poet, painter (briefly a member of the British Surrealist Group) and occultist, extracts from which first appeared in print in 1939. Narrated in the first person and set on an unnamed island, its title is a little used name for the philosopher's stone. The story concerns the narrator's relationship with her uncle, who lives on the island, and his ultimate aim of conquering death. Very Good plus in dw. (slightly faded at spine panel).
