Dianetics: The Original Thesis.

Wichita, KS: The Wichita Publishing Co., distributed by The Hubbard Dianetic Foundation, Inc., 1951. First edition. 8vo. 101pp.

SIGNED by L. Ron Hubbard in ink on the front free endpaper.

An early work by the founder of the Church of Scientology, written in 1947 and preceding "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health" (1950). It was originally titled "Scientology: A New Science", then retitled "Abnormal Dianetics" when it was presented to the medical and psychiatric profession in early 1948.

The book predates Hubbard's classification of Scientology as an "applied religious philosophy", and in it he expounds on 'engrams' as the source of "all psychological pain" and argues that individuals can reach the state of 'clear' by exorcising their engrams to an 'auditor' (Aldous Huxley famously received auditing from Hubbard in 1950, and his ideas appear in Huxley's novel, "Island"). Lengthy blurb to dw. flaps by A.E. van Vogt, then head of Hubbard's Dianetics operation in California and a trained Dianetics auditor.

Slight spotting and offsetting to front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers; lower corners slightly bumped; head and tail of spine tender; o/w Very Good in dw., darkened along spine and with small areas of paper loss to upper panel (disguised by the addition of loosely inserted internal paper strengthening and a clear glassine outer dw.). Ex-libris Felix Dennis, with his small bookplate affixed to front pastedown (hidden by the front flap). An important and early exposition of L. Ron Hubbard's ideas, rarely found signed.
