Two original paintings, each signed by the artist, dated 1966 ('Aegina Greece') and August 1968 respectively.

Watercolour paint on fibre paper; 29x39cm. + 21x37.6cm.

The first of the two paintings depicts a seated male figure looking out of a window from within a brick-walled interior, with decorative curtains to each side, probably the windmill on the Greek island of Aegina where the Australian-born artist and musician lived for two years during the mid-'60s. The second painting is multi-coloured and highly decorative, featuring rainbow motifs, a distant sunset, and a central image of a peacock, probably painted in Aegina shortly before the artist's departure for London in late 1968.

Rothfield, a flautist who had previously studied with jazz pianist Lennie Tristano in New York, formed Quintessence in Notting Hill in April 1969 with five other musicians, all of whom shared an interest in Indian music. They became regulars at the Roundhouse, Friars in Aylesbury, the Temple (formerly the Flamingo) in Soho and elsewhere, before releasing their debut album in November 1969 and graduating to bigger venues such as the Albert Hall. Later, following a trip to Goa in 1989, and after several years away from the music scene, Raja Jam formed Shpongle, a psychedelic electronic music project, helped create psytrance, and founded TIP Records, still active today.

These two paintings, the only examples of Raja Jam's visual work this cataloguer has located, were acquired by their former owner during the time she spent working as an assistant to Quintessence's manager, Stanley Barr.
