The Cloud Doctrine: Selected Tapes by Angus MacLise.

Brussels: Sub Rosa, 2003. Double CD (SR182). 159 minutes. 12pp. booklet featuring sleeve notes by Gerard Malanga and Guy Marc Hinant, and a surviving fragment of autobiographical text by MacLise.

The 16 tracks include 'The First Subtle Cabinet', a 26-minute recording made at 56 Ludlow Street, New York in November 1963, featuring MacLise playing the cimbalom accompanied by Piero Heliczer and Tony Conrad.

The other recordings, some of which also feature John Cale, Beverly Grant and Hetty MacLise, were first discovered in 1981 by Don Snyder at the bottom of a closet in his apartment, and date from between 1963 and 1976. They include 'Chumlum' (the soundtrack for Ron Rice's eponymous film, November 1963); 'Tunnel Music #1-3' (recorded for Snyder's multimedia show, c. 1965); and 'Electronic Mix for Expanded Cinema' (November 1965).
