ANDY WARHOL'S INDEX (BOOK).

NY: Random House, c. December 1967. First edition. 4to. Unpaginated (72pp. + 2 fold-out to double page). Quarter cloth and paper covered boards with 'Brillo' plastic laminated Rowlux lenticular front cover designed by Andy Warhol.

This predominantly visual, multi-media book, nominally written by Warhol though with Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Nico and Ondine credited for their "assistance", includes an interview with Ingrid Superstar about the Velvet Underground, with comments on several of their 1966 performances. Photographs by Nat Finkelstein, Billy Name, and others.

Complete with all inserts, as follows:

a) pop-up castle;

b) fold-out concertina (no longer squeaks, as usual);

c) pop-up airplane;

d) 'Chelsea Girls' disc on a spring, still attached;

e) jump-out dodecahedron with string and elastic band intact, still attached (short tears to lower edges of adjacent pages where opened at white sticker);

f) Velvet Underground flexi-disc, with picture of Lou Reed by Billy Name, still attached (the recording features Lou Reed, Nico and others discussing the proposed book at the Factory, with 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' record playing in the background);

g) multi-colour psychedelic fold-out of Andy's nose;

h) Hunt's tomato paste pop-up;

i) all eight tear-off strips designed to be dipped in warm water;

j) balloon, which, as usual, has fused into a hard mass and stuck the two adjacent pages together, with minor discolouration to the following two 'Blank' pages.

The sewn binding is slightly loose at one signature, a not uncommon flaw with this item, otherwise a Very Good plus copy of the quintessential pop art book.
