The author (and founder of Crown Point Press) worked with Cage on the prints, who told her that the purpose of art is "to sober and quiet the mind, so that it is in accord with what happens". The first part of the book is a text written from her own experience in assisting Cage's printmaking; the second a detailed section that illustrates "scores" that Cage created for his printers, and explains his use of "chance operations" in making his work; and the third section of the book is pictorial.
