NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux/The Noonday Press, 1970. First edition. Sm. 4to. Wrps., unpaginated (approx. 175pp.). Ed. Richard Schechner. Illustrated throughout with 360 b/w photographs.

'Dionysus in 69', an adaptation and improvisation based on Euripides' 'The Bacchae', was the first performance by The Performance Group, and the first environmental theatre production shown at the Performing Garage (June 1968-July 1969). It featured a number of 'firsts' for the New York theatre, including audience participation, man-to-man kissing, and full-frontal nudity of both women and men, with each performance intended to confront both the performer and the spectator.

The book is an attempt to re-create the experience of coming into The Performance Garage, either "to join the revels of the god, or just to watch", and includes extensive commentary by Schechner and the performers.
