The Naked Lunch + Olympia Press Catalogue.

Paris: Olympia Press, July 1959. First edition. 12mo. Wrps. Dustwrapper designed by William Burroughs. Issued as no. 76 in the Traveller's Companion Series. Price on lower wrapper not cancelled (copies distributed following the revaluation of the Franc in January 1960 had the printed price stamped over).

A very Near Fine copy, showing only faint discolouration to fore-edge, and with a tiny bump to tail of spine at corner of lower wrapper. Dustwrapper unusually intact and unblemished (only the slightest of creasing at the head and tail of spine panel). Housed in a handsome custom-made clamshell box, with marbled paper sides and gilt-lettered leather spine. An excellent copy of Burroughs' most important work, and a high spot of twentieth century American literature.

Together with: a copy of the rare Olympia Press catalogue for 1959 announcing the book's publication: "Mentor to the Beat Generation? The novices better wise up more. This is El Hombre Invisible in the toughest book of the year: THE NAKED LUNCH." 12mo. Slim wrps. (28pp.), illustrated throughout (including the photograph of Burroughs by Allen Ginsberg reproduced on the inner flap of the book's dustwrapper).

Prints four extracts from the book, including a section from the "Talking Asshole" routine, and an account of the narrator's shooting up ritual from the "Habit Note" section.

Other titles listed include books by Lawrence Durrell, Raymond Queneau, Maxwell Kenton (Terry Southern), JP Donleavy, Jean Genet, Jean Cocteau, Frank Harris, the Marquis de Sade, Pauline Réage, Henry Miller, Wu Wu Meng (Sinclair Beiles), and Samuel Beckett. The controversies surrounding the publication of "Lolita" and Roger Casement's "Black Diaries" are covered over two and four pages respectively, and a price list and order form is included at the back.

Faint half-ring coffee stain at "The Naked Lunch" entry; cover slightly rubbed and lightly creased; o/w Very Good. The only copy of this ephemeral item this cataloguer has encountered.
