Bleed. Nick ZEDD.

200.

Bleed.

NY: Penetration Films, 1990. First edition. 4to. Duplicated sheets (118pp.), printed on rectos only, including 7pp. photo-illustrations. Plastic clip binding, with clear acetate front wrapper and black plastic lower wrapper.

Nick Zedd has written out his surname vertically in bold black and white lettering along the right-hand edge of the colour front cover sheet, and hand painted the title in blood red at the top.

The original self-published limited edition of Zedd's autobiography, subsequently published (possibly with a revised text) as "Totem of the Depraved" (parts of which had appeared earlier in a Hanuman Press miniature book, also titled "Bleed").

Zedd coined the term 'Cinema of Transgression' in 1985 to describe his own films and those of his peers, such as Richard Kern, who were also making films in New York, and under the pseudonym Orion Jeriki he edited and wrote The Underground Film Bulletin (1984-90) which publicised their work.

The 7pp. selection of illustrations show various photographs of Zedd, several of them alongside his collaborators and co-stars, among them Rick Strange, Donna Death, Lydia Lunch, Casandra Stark, Lung Leg, and Susan Manson (in Annie Sprinkle's NYC studio). Others discussed at length, mentioned or otherwise briefly referenced in the text include John Lurie, John Waters, Klaus Nomi, Jonas Mekas, Richard Kern, John Giorno, Diamanda Galas, Kathy Acker, Richard Hell, and Jack Smith ("my greatest influence").

Very Good plus.
