DIVINE.

A group of 7 b/w contact sheet photographs of Divine by Billy Maynard, c.1973 + photos of Mario Montez and Silva Thin.

Two strips of two prints (each measures approx. 14x5cm.), and three individual prints (each approx. 4.5x6.5cm.), cut from a contact sheet, with the photographer's stamp to versos.

The images portray Divine in a number of different poses, most of them taken in her (or someone's) kitchen. One of them was used to illustrate an interview with John Waters published in Screw #230 (July 30, 1973), a clipping of which is included, folded and mailed in the accompanying Hotel Chelsea envelope to William Levy, then editor of Suck. The prints are contained within two folded sheets of Hotel Chelsea notepaper and enclosed in a separate Hotel Chelsea envelope, addressed by Maynard to Levy, c/o Lynne Tillman in Amsterdam, and postmarked, New York, July 30, 1973.

Together with:

i) an original b/w photograph of 'Flaming Creatures' and Warhol Superstar Mario Montez in drag by Billy Maynard, inscribed by the photographer in ink on the verso (and amended in an unknown hand). No date (early '70s). Print size 25.3x20.3cm.; image size 24.7x16.4cm.;

ii) an original b/w photograph by Billy Maynard of Warhol Superstar Silva Thin (Jeremy Ayers) with an unidentified leather man. No date (early '70s). Print size 25.3x20.3cm.; image size 15.8x10.8cm. Photographer's stamp to verso (and ink inscription in an unknown hand). Some creasing and age-related wear and tear.

Billy Maynard, a music photographer who specialised in glam rock acts and trans performers, was found murdered in his room at the Chelsea in 1974. Two photographs by him were included in 'The Cockettes: Acid Drag & Sexual Anarchy' by Fayette Hauser (item #35).
