RAMPARTS Vol. 12, #5 (Berkeley, CA: December 1973).

Includes "The Third Sex: Hold On, It's Coming" (10pp.) by James Nolan, a lengthy photo-illustrated cover feature on androgyny, the "new pansexuals" who "ignore the old distinctions between man and woman, straight and gay, and flow easily from one sexual role to another." Gregory Pickup's front cover photograph shows Angels of Light members Jack (Coe) and Hibiscus wearing genderfuck costume (an uncropped version of the same photo inside also features Tahara).

The Angels of Light split from the Cockettes in early 1971, the former choosing to pursue free theatre without admission charge, and Pickup's film on their underground queer theatre, 'Tricks', is discussed in the article (the film features a clean-shaven Allen Ginsberg costumed in drag, and original songs and lyrics sung by Country Joe MacDonald, a photo of whom appears in the article alongside Peter, Dorothy, David, Gregory and Jeremy). Pickup tells Nolan that "my whole upbringing was gay. I went to Public School at Sedbergh in England, and the movie If doesn't begin to show half of the sex scenes that go down in places like that."

Also: "The Day I Was Busted By G. Gordon Liddy" (3pp.) by Timothy Leary (a variant, pre-publication version of chapters from his 1974 book, 'The Curse of the Oval Room'); May '68 five years on (4pp.) by Andrew Kopkind; much on JFK assassination conspiracy theories; the coup d'etat in Chile; Gene Marine on the ecology movement; more.

Subscription slip still bound in; mailing address label to back cover; o/w Very Good plus.
