Item #39030 DEFENSE OF THE LIVING THEATRE.

45.

DEFENSE OF THE LIVING THEATRE.

A petition organised by Karl Bissinger soliciting support for the 'Declaration of Conscience of Emergency Committee for The Defense of The Living Theatre' (NY: 1963). Two mimeographed sheets, stapled at top corner.

The Living Theatre was forced to close in 1963 because of IRS charges of tax problems (later proved false). Julian Beck and Judith Malina represented themselves in the trial in 1964, but were convicted of contempt of court, for which they served sixty and thirty days respectively in jail. After being placed on probation for five years, they left America in early 1965 for voluntary exile in Europe.

Karl Bissinger was an American photographer who first met Beck and Malina at a demonstration in New York in 1955 and later served as an occasional photographer of the Theatre group and its performances.

Old central horizontal fold, o/w Near Fine.
