BRAUTIGAN, Richard.

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace.

SF: Communication Company, March 1967. First edition, first issue, with faint background text and 'Loudspeaker Current' diagram. Broadside. 28x21.5cm.

Brautigan wrote the poem in January 1967 while he was poet-in-residence at the California Institute of Technology and it was the first poem he gave to Com/co. In it, he envisions a utopian future of cybernetic ecology and harmony between nature and machine that later proved inspirational to the early computer hackers (in the original sense of the term). Its title was adopted by Loving Grace Cybernetics, the company behind Lee Felsenstein's Community Memory Project, a people's electronic bulletin board located in various public places throughout the San Francisco Bay Area that operated between 1973 and 1975.
