Ed. Brion Mitchell, Cate Mitchell, Malcolm Ross, and others; co-ordinated later by Ken Lyons. Foolscap. Silkscreen two-colour covers (and some internal pages and centrespreads); unbound stencil-duplicated sheets. Each 20pp.

A group of 10 issues of Hapt (from 27 published), a magazine produced by the English Diggers and considered at the time to be the best of the free magazines (Bitman #1 described it as a "very fine free revolutionary mag"). Together with: a special Hapt issue on drugs (14pp.), with a mimeographed Hapt Bulletin laid in (c. summer 1968), and "communications network release", an autograph manuscript written at the Cambridge Digger Conference in January 1968 announcing Hapt as "one of many evolving voices through which people can communicate" (37x28cm.).

The magazines' contents include Greg Sams on Zen macrobiotics; yoga sutras; reprint of the San Francisco Diggers' "Time To Forget" handbill; the revolutionary tactics of groups and individuals; songs of the Black Hand Gang; "Back to the Land or Back to the Mud?"; a front page letter from Black activist Courtney Tulloch; reprinted texts from Up Against the Wall/Motherfuckers and the Situationist International; "Free-Fall" (by Christopher Gray?); poetry and prose by George Dowden; Joseph Berke ("Man and Destruction in Art", a paper originally prepared for the Destruction in Art Symposium, 1966); "Psychoanalysis and the Dialectic"; ecology; Joseph Berke on "The Psychedelic Experience" (3pp.); personal recollections from the Roundhouse Gathering of Communes (August 2, 1970), which was attended by 400 people; Ireland (including poems by Jim McCann); the female orgasm by Leah Fritz; The Sacred Seed Commune; an account of an LSD trip; a report from the Cold Mountain commune (New York State); Wilhelm Reich; news from like-minded groups and individuals, and alternative press listings. In keeping with the ethos of communal living and anti-capitalism espoused by the magazine, issue #26 shares information about its means of production and provides a comprehensive description of the screen-making process, an example of DIY culture that carried over into the punk era.

Hapt was published every 5-6 weeks in an edition of under 400 copies and distributed for free by post and via alternative bookshops, BIT and the New Arts Lab. In the 'Directory of Communes' (item #22), Hapt described themselves as a "decentralised, mobile printing collective at present operating from addresses in Hampshire and Gloucestershire. Functions through close contact with associate brothers and sisters living separate from the tribe or out of the country. Originated autumn 1967… The tribe's project is expansion and contribution to the emergence of a unified revolutionary people who will come together, live together and fight together for the creation of an alternative." Sister Hapt communes appeared in Holland, Argentina, Belgium and Switzerland, though the magazine itself ceased publication in May 1971, with the collective announcing that it would be "dropping the idea of a settled, communal base for the tribe and become a nomadic Earth People."

Wear to spine of issue #2, o/w condition overall Very Good or better. Issue #22 from the collection of Simon Vinkenoog (stamped 'Vinkenoog Kollektie' on the front cover).
