EARTH Vol. 1, #1 (SF: Earth Publishing Corporation, December 1970).

Ed. James Goode. Magazine format. 79pp., illustrated throughout, predominantly in colour, with fold-out poster "photographed at Lama Commune, Taos, N.M." Front cover colour photo of "Spectator, Isle of Wight" by David Hurn.

The premiere issue of this countercultural magazine, founded by James Goode, a former articles editor at Playboy who created the Playboy Interview. Goode also established Earth News, a national alternative radio news service for rock stations, which his magazine advertised.

The first four pages provide an almanac listing boutiques and hip stores in Atlanta, Baltimore, St. Louis, Washington D.C. and Cincinnati, followed by a 2pp. listings of events in various cities across America, including concerts by Frank Zappa, James Brown, and Sly and The Family Stone.

Articles include a 13pp. feature on the Isle of Wight Festival by the magazine's London correspondents, Peter Stansill and Neil Lyndon, with colour photographs by Jim Marshall and David Hurn (Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Roger Daltrey, John Sebastian, Donovan, Joan Baez, skinny-dipping hippies, Hell's Angels), quoting Mick Farren, Rikki Farr and festival-goers; a feature on pollution in New York City; a 7pp. report on the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Marin County, photographed by Stephen Frisch; a 3pp. feature on Iggy and the Stooges ("the Living Theater of Sound") by Bob Rudnick, with colour photos of Iggy by Bud Lee (not stated, but four from the five were shot at the Stooges gig at Unganos in Greenwich Village, February 1970); "What on Earth Are We Doing?" by Alan Watts (8pp.); 4pp. feature on Joan (Tiger) Morse (designer, boutique owner and creator of the vinyl mini-dress and the light-up electric dress, and star of Andy Warhol's 1967 film Tiger Morse (Reel 14 of ****); "Street Clothes" double-page colour fashion spread; obituaries of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix; Nat Freedland on Elton John at the Troubadour (2pp.); spoof review of The Bible; more.

It's unclear how many issues of Earth were published, but by July 1972 it was in receivership and Goode subsequently moved on to edit Penthouse.

Very Good plus, with unopened Lama Commune poster still attached at staples.
