Farallones Scrapbook.

Point Reyes, CA: Farallones Designs, 1971. First trade edition (distributed by Random House). Sq. 4to. Wrps., 144pp. Illustrated throughout with photographs, drawings and diagrams.

The book documents the Odyssey School Initiative, a project established by Sim Van der Ryn at UC Berkeley's Department of Architecture in which graduate students collaborated with local elementary school teachers and students to restructure classrooms and playgrounds using salvaged materials. An extensive section on geometry and dome building, inspired by Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House and Lloyd Kahn's Domebook One, shows several examples of domes (from models to full-size structures) built from a variety of materials, including plastic straws and discarded garden hoses.

Other sections cover do-it-yourself constructions using old tyres, scrap wood, cardboard, rope, trash cans, and inflatables, the latter featuring a suggestion for teachers and adults that they "Pick-up a copy of Ant Farm's 'Inflato-Cookbook' for lots of other groovy ideas and information."

Originally produced in a now rare private edition, the book was subsequently picked up by Random House and became a best-selling West Coast 'lifestyle' publication.

Lower wrapper partially faded; slight wear along edges of wrappers; top right corner of first leaf neatly clipped; o/w Very Good plus (spine tight and square).
