Country Women was a bi-monthly magazine of alternative, anti-urban and anti-consumerist lifestyles produced between 1973 and 1979 by a collective of women in Mendocino County, California. It advanced a back-to-the-land ideology and emphasised local farming and eco-activism, its ethos largely based on the principles of radical lesbian separatism. Each issue was 'woman identified' and included articles on women's liberation accompanied by practical material on country survival skills, carpentry, mechanics, gardening, childbirth and child rearing.
This issue's theme was 'Spirituality' and includes articles on 'Religious Freakism'; a letter from a Quaker woman; 'Feminism and the Aquarian Age'; 'The Country as a Spiritual Freeway'; 'Witchcraft'; 'Fasting with a Sister'; songs and more. Sherry Thomas's article about the practice of companion planting blends scientific and spiritual ecological knowledge - "Plants are living beings; they form relationships and have distinct likes and dislikes" - while practical advice include tips on health and yoga; raising goats; preventative car maintenance; self defence; home brew; tipis; and more.
