Hey Beatnik! This Is The Farm Book.
Summertown, Tennessee: The Book Publishing Co., 1974. First edition, second printing (cover price of $1.95; the first printing had a $1.00 cover price). 4to. Wrps., saddle-stitched. Unpaginated (104pp.). Printed in different colour inks. Illustrated throughout, including numerous photographs in b/w and colour.
Originally published in 1971, a few years after the founding of Stephen Gaskin's 300-strong farm community in Tennessee, the book provides a guide to living independently and at one with nature, and offers practical advice on successfully setting up and maintaining a commune, with sections on how to deliver a baby, tantric yoga, psychedelics, healing, vegetarianism, and much else. In the mid-late '60s, Gaskin taught a 'Monday Night Class' in the student-financed and controlled Experimental College in San Francisco, held in 'The Family Dog' auditorium on the Great Highway. The class later began identifying itself as a 'religion', with Gaskin as its guru, before moving en masse via bus caravan to the 1700 acre farm in Tennessee.
