Automerica: A Trip Down U.S. Highways from World War II to the Future.

NY: E.P. Dutton, 1976. First edition. 4to. Wrps. (no hardcover issued), 144pp. Profusely illustrated throughout with photographs, vintage ads., publicity shots, etc. Incl. a 2pp. bibliography.

Written and designed (with Curtis Schreier) by Ant Farm co-founder Chip Lord, who relates his early love affair with the car and the American Dream it promised, and of how it was later dispelled by Vietnam war-era disillusionment and the 'Gas War'. Includes sections on Ant Farm's 'Media Van' and their Cadillac Ranch in Texas. Lord makes clear his liking for cultural mutants such as the nomadic truckitects and their funky mobile homes ("an interesting counterpoint"), but concludes that "it should cost a lot to travel thirty miles" and that "The real future belongs to the bicycle."

Short, closed tear to lower edge of upper wrapper, o/w a tight, Very Good plus copy, with uncreased spine.
