The author was a Canadian musicologist and folklorist who set out across Canada in 1962 to study the folk music of immigrants from Europe and Asia, and became the first to transcribe the motifs of Doukhobor psalms into musical notes, several of which are reproduced in the book alongside some of the numerous photographs he took of the Doukhobor communities he visited.
