PORNOGRAPHY UNCOVERED, EROTICISM EXPOSED.
Two variant broadside flyers printing details of 'Pornography Uncovered, Eroticism Exposed', an 'X-Rated Course' held over six sessions at the New School for Social Research, New York City, October 3-November 7 (1973).
The first flyer is printed in wine-coloured ink on wove pink stock, and illustrated on the verso with an image from National Lampoon by Dick Hess; the second is printed in black, recto only, on red heavy paper stock. Both measure 35.5x21.5cm. Two dates differ on the flyers, and the layout varies slightly.
The outline of the course, as quoted from a report in The Village Voice printed below the illustration, states that "The political, economic, moral, legal, artistic, and psychological aspects of pornography are investigated and illustrated in panel discussions and presentations… The emergence of pornography as a national fad through such films as Deep Throat will be commented upon as well as the Supreme Court's recent anti-pornography ruling."
The six weekly 'lectures' included one titled 'Women Erotic Artists', which featured feminist artists Anita Steckel, Eunice Golden, Juanita McNeely, Joan Semmel, and Anne Sharp, with a 'Command Cello Performance' by Charlotte Moorman (though she was disinclined to view herself or her work as feminist). The other sessions were 'Erotic Rock' by early glam-punk exponents, The Harlots of 42nd Street; 'video free pornography' (featuring Taylor Mead); 'Pornography As News' (with Al Goldstein and Jim Buckley of Screw); 'Theatre of Pornography'; and 'Pornography, Morality and the Law (with Barney Rosset and others, plus 'Kumquats, the world's first erotic puppet show').
The course, the first on pornography ever offered at an American university, was run by Michael C. Luckman, who had previously taught the first college course on rock music (he's now director of the New York Center for Extraterrestrial Research and founder of the Cosmic Majority).
