Illustrated with 155 crime scene and forensic photographs culled from the LAPD archive dating from the 1930s to the 1960s, accompanied by descriptive captions from police logs and original newspaper accounts.

Foreword by Chief of Police, LAPD, William J. Bratton; introduction by James Ellroy (one of the first photographs shows the crime scene from the 'Black Dahlia' case); essay by Tim B. Wride.

Notorious crimes featured include the Onion Field murder, the unsolved death of silent film star Thelma Todd (see also item #112), and the killing of Kansas City gangsters 'The Two Tonys' by Jimmie 'The Weasel' Fratiano. Also featured are a communiqué from the Symbionese Liberation Army; four shots of Lenny Bruce's Hollywood Hills apartment taken following his overdose in 1966, one of them showing his heroin paraphernalia; and a photograph of the Manson Family's 'Pig' blood-daubed wall.
