League For Spiritual Discovery.

(LEARY, Timothy).

League For Spiritual Discovery.

5pp. mimeo, stapled at top corner. Statement distributed at a press conference held in the headquarters of the newly formed “psychedelic religion”, c. October 1966.

The principal author of the paper, which sets out the LSD religion’s purposes, methods, and administrative and legal structure, was almost certainly Timothy Leary, who is named in it as the first of five League Guides (“drop-outs”) elected in “a meeting held at the Monastery of the LSD, Millbrook, N.Y. on October, 11, 1966”.

The paper’s third section announces that “Like the founding group of every great world religion, the LSD aims to expand consciousness…” and that “The SACRAMENTS of LSD are psychedelic chemicals…”.

The League for Spiritual Discovery replaced the Castalia Foundation, and its New York City headquarters, a storefront on the corner of Hudson Street and Tenth Avenue in the East Village, soon became a recovery centre for people having bad LSD trips, before eventually closing due to lack of funds.

Near Fine. Scarce.
