LSD: The Library of Julio Santo Domingo.

NY: Yolanda Cuomo Design, 2013. First edition. Two volumes, paged continuously (899pp.): first volume bound in purple cloth, second in red cloth, housed in gray burlap-covered clamshell box
(36x27x12cm.) with label on cover reading “Ex libris Julio Santo Domingo” (printed on cream paper with illustration of a smoking opium pipe). Interior of case lined with illustrated paper depicting mushrooms and other flora.

Printed sheet laid in: “The Library of Julio Santo Domingo, now on long-term loan at Harvard’s Houghton Library and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is one of history’s greatest collections dedicated to the concept of altered states through drugs, art, sex, magic and rock and roll. The LSD Library book is a tribute to Julio Santo Domingo in loving memory from his family.”

Foreword by Leslie A. Morris, Curator of Modern Books and Manuscripts, Houghton Library, Harvard University. Profusely and lavishly illustrated throughout, mainly in colour, some fold-outs; photographs by Jason Brownrigg.

A privately published and beautifully designed record of Julio Santo Domingo’s collection, described by rare book dealer William Dailey as “by far the greatest collection ever conceived or built in this area.” The library consisted not just of books but also rare manuscripts, posters, objects, and drug paraphernalia, and eventually took over three huge rooms in Geneva, before being loaned to Harvard University and the The Rock‘n’Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in 2012, three years after Santo Domingo’s death.

The first volume is divided into seven chapters: Stones (Santo Domingo’s godfather was Ahmet Artegun, and the Rolling Stones, who he later became friends with, were his first obsession); Weed; Beat; Pop; Pulp; Acid; and Erotica; volume 2 is devoted to sections on Coke; Revolt; Occult; Opium; Mots et images; and Rock.

A sumptuous production, limited to 1000 copies (not to be confused with the trade volume published in 2017, “Altered States: The Library of Julio Santo Domingo"). Fine, with the original wrapping paper, as issued.
