HELIOTROPE FREE UNIVERSITY - San Francisco Marin. Two semester course catalogues, Fall 1968 and Fall 1969.

8vo. Stapled wrps., 12pp. + 35pp. Front cover design of Fall 1969 catalogue by Thomas Weir (his photo of the Grateful Dead and friends from Olompali Ranch in Marin County features on the back of cover of “Aoxomoxoa”); a poem by Michael McClure appears on page 18 (“The New Politics Is Here”).

Heliotrope had two locations, on Filbert Street, San Francisco and in Mill Valley, Marin County. Although it’s unclear exactly when it was founded, these catalogues appear to be early, with the first containing descriptions for 44 countercultural and New Age courses (including “Encounter Group” and “Post-Revolutionary Marriage”), and the second, issued a year later, listing 51 (among them, “Breaking the Computer Mystique”, “Watermelon Medicine”, and “Multi-Media Art”, the latter run by Jerry Abrams, lightshow operator at the Fillmore and Avalon Ballrooms).

The Fall 1969 catalogue has a faint stain to upper edge of lower wrapper, with light age-toning; o/w both catalogues Very Good plus.
