FREE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY. Free You! Original poster printed sepia on white paper stock.

Lexington, KY: Free U., nd. (September 1970). 44.5x57.3cm. Folded into quarters.

The poster shows the co-ordinating body of the first free university in Kentucky gathered outside their first “schoolhouse” at Fort Harrod in 1969. The verso, printed in purple, lists courses and offers a synopsis of the free university’s ethos by co-ordinator Paul Wertheimer: “We believe the most revolutionary act an individual can perform is that of thinking for one’s self… The philosophy [then] of the free university is contrary to the thoughts of those who envision education as a commodity. We don’t believe education is a commodity to be measured-out in credits and grades. We believe in a free university; we believe in a free you!”.

Based at the University of Kentucky, courses listed include “Ins and outs of the draft”, “Change without violence”, “Selective readings from the Texas Schoolbook Depository”, “Men’s Liberation”, and “How to: retire before 30, survive after the bomb, or become self-reliant”.
