London: Rice N Peas, 2014. First edition. 4to. Illustrated laminated boards. 351pp. Preface by Margaret Busby.

SIGNED and warmly inscribed on the title page by the editor (a writer and filmmaker who works for Rice N Peas, a social justice advocacy, and a former coordinator for Justice 4 Grenfell) to Hoppy, one of the book’s contributors: “You have been an inspiration throughout the making of this book. A true hero and unsung pioneer of the Notting Hill Carnival. Your contribution in part I hope will be immortalized in these pages. I’ll see you on the battlefield. Ishmahil 11-08-2014.”

A photo-based documentary of the Carnival, from its pre-history (the 1958 Notting Hill riots, the murder of Kelso Cochrane, and Claudia Jones’s Caribbean Carnival), through the riots of 1976, to more recent years, featuring sections on the live stages, sound systems, the Mangrove, and much more.

Lavishly illustrated throughout with photographs in colour and b/w by, among others, Allan ‘Capitan’ Thornhill, Vernon St Hilaire, Norman Reid, Adam Ritchie, Val Wilmer, and Charlie Phillips (including one of Michael X, pictured in 1966 with Bobby Stignac, Archie Seaforth, and Allan ‘Capitan’ Thornhill). Replete with recollections and commentary from, among many others, Darcus Howe, Wilf Walker, Mike Laslett, Rasta Billy, Victor Crichlow, Michael Horovitz, Pete Jenner, Jeff Dexter, Barbara Shervington, Junior Telfer, and Clive ‘Mashup’ Phillips.
