“The Killings in Trinidad”, front cover feature by VS Naipaul (15pp., photo-illustrated), in THE SUNDAY TIMES Magazine (London: May 12, 1974).

The first of a two-part story on Michael X, who had been sentenced to death two years earlier, in which Naipaul “tries to arrive at the truth behind these terrible and apparently pointless events. His method is to record the extraordinary life and analyse the complex psychology of the man who was responsible for them; and also to describe the deluded followers, many of them English, who were in turn largely reponsible for Michael X.”

In a letter published by Time Out a month later, Alexander Trocchi commented on the two-part article by Naipaul: a “fellow Trinidadian from the other side of the tracks… [who] indulges rather uncharacteristically in an utterly pitiless and unalloyed condemnation of a man who, it seems, he did not even know.”
