Not specifically related to the Dialectics of Liberation conference, but an important work produced in collaboration with its leading organiser, Joseph Berke. Barnes, a nurse with a long history of severe mental distress, was the first and best-known resident of Kingsley Hall, where Berke worked. Over the course of five years, with Berke’s help, she experienced a profound death-rebirth, using painting and writing to slowly re-emerge. Barnes subsequently had a successful career as a painter (her work is illustrated on the dustwrapper and in the book), and lived in Scotland where she and others tried to establish community households along the lines of the Philadelphia Association.
