Halloween-themed issue featuring artwork by Emory Douglas to both the front and back covers: “Trick or Treat Pigs Trick or Treat”.
Page 2 prints an ad. announcing a rally in New Haven on November 3 demanding the “Immediate Release of Ericka [Huggins] and Bobby [Seale]”, and page 4 announces the future publication of a book of Emory Douglas’s revolutionary art to be titled “We will not hesitate to either kill or die for our freedom” (a slogan from one of his recent drawings), though no record of the book ever being published can be found.
Other contents include an interview with Shellie Bursey in Santa Rita County Jail, pictured with Brenda Presley (both women had recently been sentenced to jail for refusing to answer questions in court about the BPP newspaper they worked for); news of the NY Panther 21 bust, with photo of Afeni Shakur and Jamal, two of the 21; centrespread headline: “With Every Pig Attack On The Vanguard Party, The People’s Willingness And Ability To Deal With The Pigs Grows”; full page designed by Emory Douglas announcing the Revolutionary People’s Constitutional Convention in Washington DC (see also item #33); full page of photographs celebrating the “Opening of International Section of the Black Panther Party Algiers, Algeria November 13, 1970”, including Eldridge Cleaver and Elaine Brown at the opening; and a full-page ad. announcing the “First Major San Francisco Appearance” of The Lumpen, the Black Panther Party’s official revolutionary band (managed by Emory Douglas and lasting only about ten months, the band played current hits but changed the lyrics to express the revolutionary message of the Party).
