GONDOLA HAPPENING.

Flyer advertising the happening at Ponte di Rialto conceived by Nam June Paik and Charlotte Moorman for the opening night of the 33rd Venice Biennale, June 18, 1966. Printed offset in black on off-white paper. 21.6x28cm. Prints a quote attributed to John Cage (via Heinz-Klaus Metzger).

The midnight happening was watched by hundreds of spectators, among them Peggy Guggenheim, Roy Lichtenstein and Leo Castelli. As their gondola floated up the Grand Canal, Moorman performed Cage’s “26'1.1499" ” while Ay-O showered her and Paik with rose petals from the bridge above. Moorman then jumped (or fell) into the canal, followed by Paik, and after surfacing, played Paik’s “Variations on a Theme by Saint-Saëns” while still dripping wet.

Near Fine (very short top right corner crease).
