Lou Harrison: Composing a World.

NY/Oxford: OUP, 1998. First edition. 8vo. 385pp. + audio CD.

SIGNED and inscribed by the composer on the front free endpaper: “for Mark with happy memory & present pleasure from Lou”, together with a printed letter to the recipient loosely inserted, signed “Lou” in red ink.

Based on nearly seventy interviews, the book provides a detailed biography of Harrison, followed by individual chapters focusing on music and dance, intonation and tuning, instruments, Asian influences, music criticism, music and politics, compositional practices, and gender issues, including the historical background of San Francisco’s gay community. It also includes the first complete catalogue of Harrison’s works, with comprehensive details of over 300 compositions. The 70min. CD includes recordings of “Peace Pipe #2” (written in protest at the Vietnam War); a percussion work from 1941, previously thought lost; Harrison’s performance of a traditional Korean piece; and more, with most works recorded for the first time.

Fine in dw.; CD inside lower board unopened.
