Tokyo: Fool’s Mate, 1985. First edition. Oblong 8vo. Colour photo-illustrated wrps. Unpaginated (152pp.). Text in Japanese with captions in English. Cover shots of Psychic TV and the Virgin Prunes, the latter alongside a lengthy quote from William Burroughs (from “The Electronic Revolution”).
The book reproduces full-page photographs capturing numerous early-mid 1980s post-punk, new wave, noise, industrial, goth, hardcore, metal and indie artists, many of them shot by Japanese photographers, including Tetsuya Narikiyo, Kenji Kubo and Saori Tsuji.
A 32pp. section of colour plates features, among others, Joy Division, Elizabeth Fraser, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, Psychic TV, Jim Foetus, Gart Greenside, Dave Vanian, Pete Burns, Nick Cave, Marc Almond, Jesus & Mary Chain, Robert Smith, John Lydon, and Ian McCulloch.
Black and white photographs include The The, Sperma, Richard Hell, Boyd Rice, Sonic Youth, Cabaret Voltaire, Lydia Lunch and Nick Cave, New Order, Einstürzende Neubauten, The Honeymoon Killers, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Verna Lindt, Tracey Thorn, Alien Sex Fiend, Mark E.
