The Black Panther Black Community News Service Volume II, #12-14 (San Francisco, CA: November 16, 1968).

Tabloid format newspaper, published weekly. 24pp. (incl. cover).

Front cover artwork by Emory Douglas, captioned “Through the Melting Pot Into the Pig Structure”, with accompanying headline: “Racist Ethnic Groups Battle For Pig Power”.

The lengthy article inside gives an historical account of the “ethnic” and often “gangland-type battles” for political power waged throughout America “for centuries” between “Italian mayors, Irish police chiefs, Jewish judges, and Anglo-Saxon Capitalists”, accompanied by photographs of “Pig Chief Cahill” (Thomas Cahill, then chief of police of San Francisco), Scarface Alioto Capone, Dutch Schultz, Machine Gun Kelly, and others. A pyramid graph depicts Anglo-Saxons at the top and “Blacks and Other Minorities” at the bottom.

Page 7 prints photographs from a “Panther Rally For Eldridge” (in front of San Francisco Town Hall) and mentions that “November 27 is Eldridge’s deadline” (the date Cleaver was scheduled to return to jail, though instead he jumped bail and fled to Mexico, then Cuba, and ultimately to Algeria; the paper also prints a lengthy text by him, continued from an earlier issue).

Other columns featuring Panther philosophy include Huey Newton’s “In Defense of Self Defense”, “The Necessity of Black Revolution” by George Murray, the BPP’s Minister of Education, and Bobby Seale on the Party’s candidates for Congress, Huey Newton, Kathleen Cleaver, and Seale himself. The back cover includes an ad. for an exhibition featuring “The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas” at Howard University, Washington DC.
