Chicago: 1959-1960. Ed. Irving Rosenthal (#1), and Paul Carroll. Wrps., 120pp.-152pp.

Issue #1 (Spring 1959): Prints “Ten Episodes from Naked Lunch” by William Burroughs, “Three Poems” by Gregory Corso and “Old Angel Midnight” by Jack Kerouac (who gave the magazine its name). This issue constitutes the suppressed Winter 1958 issue of Chicago Review and was itself banned in March 1959 following an unofficial complaint from August Derleth, publisher of HP Lovecraft and a writer himself. At the trial in June 1959 the Judge declared Big Table “obscene”, “filthy”, and its writing “not meritorious”, though it was subsequently acquitted after several appeals and freed for distribution. The controversy provoked Maurice Girodias into dispatching his assistant Sinclair Beiles to the Beat Hotel to seek Burroughs’ permission to publish “The Naked Lunch” (for which Burroughs received a flat fee of $800), his previous reservations about the work outweighed by the recent publicity it was attracting (he had rejected an earlier version shown to him by Allen Ginsberg in 1957).

Issue #2 (Summer 1959): contains Allen Ginsberg (part one of “Kaddish”); “In Quest of Yage” by William Burroughs; Paul Bowles (“Burroughs in Tangier”); André Breton; Lawrence Ferlinghetti; Alan Ansen (the first critical piece on Burroughs).

Issue #3 (1959): Allen Ginsberg (“Kaddish”, parts II-IV); Robert Duncan; John Ashbery; Robert Creeley; Norman Mailer; Peter Orlovsky; Lawrence Ferlinghetti; Jean Genet.

Issue #4 (Spring 1960): The New American Poets issue. Includes “But All Is Back Seat of Dreaming” by William Burroughs; John Ashbery; Robert Creeley; Allen Ginsberg (“Message” and “Notes on Young Poets”); Charles Olson; Robert Duncan; Gregory Corso (two poems); Harold Norse; Michael McClure; Diane di Prima; Gary Snyder. Issue #5 (1960): Paul Bowles; Frank O’Hara; Kenneth Koch; John Updike; Alain Robbe-Grillet; Douglas Woolf.

Small ink tick to upper wrapper of the third issue, o/w Very Good plus.
