Pic was the author’s final novel, an updated version of a story begun in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, but not finally completed until 1969. Set in 1948, it tells the story of a black 10-year-old North Carolina jazz enthusiast named Pic, short for the name of Kerouac’s childhood card baseball game star, ‘Pictorial Jackson Review’.
